Star Trek Rewind
Jun. 2nd, 2009 06:01 pmFinally got to see the new Star Trek movie last night. Warning, some things I mention could be spoilers if you haven’t seen the movie.
We tried a about 10 days ago but ended up in a closed caption session. The dialogue subtitles aren’t too bad but it’s seriously distracting to have subtitles coming up to tell you things like ‘muffled explosions’ and ‘indistinct dialogue’. As we hadn’t known and hadn’t been told that it was a closed caption session, we opted out of the session. Yes, they did give us a couple of free tickets. :)
So, I enjoyed it – as it appears nearly everyone else has. I was amused by the way that they’ve now got into a position where they can go on with a completely different universal story line and recast characters, roles and interactions pretty much any way they want. And they made sure that you knew this by mentioning it a few times in a few different ways.
Of course, there’s always the option of going back and making all the planetary destruction not happen – oh wait – that would make yet another alternate reality. Time travel does complicate causality.
A few niggles such as the somewhat contrived stranding of Kirk on the same planet as the older Spock and the really silly concept of having only one person out of three carry the explosives necessary for the dangerous mission – surely everyone would have them so that one person’s serious stupidity wouldn’t jeopardise a whole mission.
There were others, but that said, I had no trouble suspending disbelief for the duration of the film and came out of it feeling quite happy.
