The Holiday – Day 1
Jul. 20th, 2005 04:38 pmDespite a few minor disasters, the holiday was good and it even felt like a holiday!
The first day didn’t get off to the best start. Styvyn got caught up at work and instead of leaving at 2pm it was more like 3pm. As we were cutting things fine anyway, this was not good.
Lesson Learned: take the full day off!
The trip to Albury was pretty uneventful – aside from the fact that is was mostly in the dark, it started to rain just after Gundagai and all the other traffic on the road appeared to be incredibly huge trucks. At 7 we rang the motel to say we’d be late and ask when the kitchen closed – 9pm as it turned out. When did we arrive? Why, 9.15 of course!
We were a little concerned that there might not be very many restaurants with the kitchen still open after 9.30, but we headed off into the main street to see what we could find. Fortunately, the god of hungry travelers must have been keeping an eye on us. The car parking space we pulled into was right outside a Teppanyaki and Sushi restaurant and it was still taking customers.
Styvyn decided that he really wanted one of the banquet offerings and was prepared to pay, so we got a very lovely meal that included sashimi, which was high on my list of requirements. Most of the meal was Teppanyaki, however – just about every type of meat and seafood in this banquet. The local people who were there were having their first Teppanyaki experience – which is always fun to watch. They were also nice and friendly so it was a fun evening – except for the one person whose eye began to swell up. We decided he must have an allergy of some kind and although it didn’t appear to be life threatening, everyone agreed that maybe he should have it checked out.
After the meal, we went back to the motel and relaxed in the spa with a bottle of champagne. The rest of the evening was good too.
Lesson Learned: sometimes it just all comes together despite the odds.
