Went to the zoo yesterday with some friends visiting from Qld. I have some ambivalent feeleings about zoos - especially wrt large animals in smallish enclosures. However, the day was fabulous overall.

Highlights - the Free Flight Bird Show - if you go, make sure you see this
- the Feathertail glider (world's smallest gliding mammal) which is mouse sized and can stick to glass - it's nocturnal so you have to go to the nocturnal display.
- The orang-utan who was wearing a sack on his head - possibly to keep the rain off. He did have an indoor place to go if he actually wanted to get out of the rain.
- the fishing cats - which were the only cats not doing what cats do best - sleeping.
- the fennec foxes who had a cub which just wanted to play

It managed to rain while we were still walking around and we got soaked but it was still a good day.

Biggest downside - I forgot my camera!

Edit: - biggest losers - the people who used flash cameras in the nocturnal house!

Haven't been to Taronga Zoo since Dion, my brother, was a keeper there. But I certainly can reaffirm what you said about the freeflight show. It's so cool! Last time I went I got to pat the last tiger cub born there. We played with a ball of rope.

I'm jealous that you got to pat a tiger cub.

As rightly so! I felt very privileged that day. The fur is extremely rough. Almost sandpapery.
