Holiday: Day 2 – The arrival
Jul. 21st, 2005 04:37 pmThe day started badly. Not from any alcohol induced effects, but because the doorstops (two of them) attacked my toes. Fortunately, the second toe on my left foot selflessly threw itself between said doorstops and the rest of my toes, but suffered severe damage in the process. For about a day and a half I thought is might be broken – it was certainly painful enough.
Lesson Learned: Watch out for strangely placed doorstops.
The trip from Albury to Melbourne was uneventful. Arrived at the hotel and all seemed to be going swimmingly until we got to the room. A quick glance around confirmed that there were, indeed, only two beds in the room – twin singles. Unfortunately, there were supposed to be 3 of us staying in the room. Trying to sort things out at the front desk was singularly unproductive as we hadn’t actually been involved in the booking process. So we registered for Continuum and then went to the bar and waited for
zarabee to arrive as she was in possession of all the facts. While at the bar we drank and socialized with other Continuum attendees – life is hard sometimes.
Eventually, the room was sorted out though not really satisfactorily – a trundle was put into the room and the hotel didn’t charge us any extra (which was good as it wasn’t really their mistake as far as we can determine.. nor zarabee's).
Lesson Learned: You can’t foresee all the possibilities for human error.
We met some Melbourne friends briefly for coffee and cake, then went and got frocked up for the cocktail party. Styvyn met more people he hadn’t seen for years. Then there was the first panel – for the life of me I can’t remember what it was, but it was good. Then we went out to dinner with some more friends from Melbourne.
No lessons were learned from this part of the day.
Thus endeth the second day.
